Amy BrittIt’s tough to give a movie a full five star rating when it’s not perfect, but what movie is perfect? For me, this movie certainly breaks new ground, which I find very rare. As a sports film, it uniquely understands the strangely unique manic quality it takes to never give up, and how that doesn’t work without a balanced, expert support team. As a biopic it beautifully and confidently blends documentary footage with recreation in an exemplary way. The underwater/journey footage is powerfully evocative, and the childhood backstory footage is intercut in a lifelike way. It’s not overemphasized, but also helps make it clear how this racer was made as well as born. Dedicated, powerful, respectful, and tough.
