"James baskett is the best thing in this shameful nugget from the Disney vaults. He is charming, and much better at acting with nothing than many of his modern cgi counterparts. The rest of the story is dull, sanitized, and painfully bad, like many of Disney’s early live-action films. A kid gets gored by a bull. James baskett was not even allowed to attend the films premiere because of segregation, and he died two years later in his mid-forties. He deserved better.
EDIT: james baskett is the only reason i'm giving this film any generosity of stars in my rating. otherwise it's VERY BadAwfulWhy."
"Okay…. This movie is sad af. I like it, but it’s not one of those movies I’d rewatch. I remember looking up behind the scenes of this movie. And of course due to discrimination, the colored actors in the movie weren’t allowed to watch their movie during the premiere/showing. It’s hard for me to watch this movie and not separate the cultural context behind it. I’m glad that times are better now than before. "
"While the downplaying and cultural insensitivity of slavery is present, along with horrible racial stereotypes. The movie still has somewhat of an endearing quality. I feel that, at the time it was made, it was supposed to be an upbeat positive tale of an old man telling moral stories to a young boy. To address the evils of slavery would have made this movie something completely different."
"Songs are really catchy and it’s one of those movies that you just can’t get enough of "

"Lost movie. Historical African American Folklore featuring Brer Rabbit as “The Trickster” from old African fables. Shared to a young child going through a divorce by a kindly sharecropper named “Uncle Remus.” These fables tell of a “trickster” who was able to overcome his trials through wit and perseverance. Representative of the “Kinship system” from Africa. Wrote a paper on this in college after discussions with a history professor who spent time in Kenya and studied Mesopotamia. "
