A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this brilliant, powerful, and unforgettable new novel by the author of The Lovely Bones and Lucky. For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and now grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined. Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced novel explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page.

"I loved The Lovely Bones, but The Almost Moon was not quite as well written. Alice Sebold developed the characters pretty well, but I did not really care for the main character because she didn't plan anything. It just happened on impulse after her frustration had built up over years, since childhood. Thus, it took a while for the stories to unfold. Then, the ending was very abrupt and left the reader hanging. It was not a bad book, but the topic was unsettling."

"I had the hardest time getting through this book. Though it has some shining points, the book feels disjointed and overly artsy as it flows through a lifetime of flashbacks. The overly graphic references to the deceased nudity, genitalia, and bodily functions were quite disturbing and really not palatable."
