C. J. Tudor
A gripping thriller about a man’s quest for the daughter no one else believes is still alive, from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man and The Hiding Place. An ID Book Club Selection • “C. J. Tudor is terrific. I can’t wait to see what she does next.”—Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling authorQ: Why are you called the Other People?A: We are people just like you. People to whom terrible things have happened. We’ve found solace not in forgiveness or forgetting. But in helping each other find justice. Driving home one night, stuck behind a rusty old car, Gabe sees a little girl’s face appear in its rear window. She mouths one word: Daddy. It’s his five-year-old daughter, Izzy. He never sees her again. Three years later, Gabe spends his days and nights traveling up and down the highway, searching for the car that took his daughter, refusing to give up hope, even though most people believe she’s dead. When the car that he saw escape with his little girl is found abandoned with a body inside, Gabe must confront not just the day Izzy disappeared but the painful events from his past now dredged to the surface. Q: What sort of justice?A: That depends on the individual. But our ethos is a punishment that fits the crime. Fran and her daughter, Alice, also put in a lot of miles on the road. Not searching. Running. Because Fran knows what really happened to Gabe’s daughter. She knows who is responsible. And she knows what they will do if they ever catch up to her and Alice. Q: Can I request to have someone killed?A: If your Request is acceptable, and unless there are exceptional circumstances, we fulfill all Requests.

"The Other People is a twisty thriller told from several viewpoints. First, we have Gabe, who while stuck in traffic on his way home sees his little girl crying for him in the back of a rusty old car with very recognizable bumper stickers. He pulls off the motorway to notify his wife of his lateness and the a DI answers telling him that his wife and daughter were murdered. Gabe gives up everything in order to search the motorway for signs of this car, and hopefully his daughter, living out of a campervan.

Which is how we meet our second character whom the story unfolds through. Katie is a waitress at one of the service centers along the motorway, working the night shift. A single mom of a son and daughter, she recognizes Gabe through the news reports, as Gabe was once the prime suspect in the double murder. Katie herself understands the kind of deep loss Gabe feels, her dad having been murdered nine years ago. She serves Gabe coffee at night and takes care of her kids by day. One day, she saves Gabe's life after the pair become even closer after a fateful late night call that Katie gets.

The third viewpoint is from Fran and 8 year old Alice. Alice battles narcolepsy and has a fear of mirrors, while Fran fears that her past will catch up to her and cause the pair harm. Alice is where the supernatural element to the story comes in, but saying more can spoil the story.

This book suvks you in immediately and is quite hard to put it down. I read it in approximately 24 hours. The majority of the chapters are very short. The author does a terrific job with pacing, building suspense, and giving us a good history of each of the main characters. Its definitely an excellent book.

I would like to thank the publisher, Ballentine Books, for a gifted copy of this book that I won in a publisher's giveaway. It has not skewed my opinions of this book or my review."

"I’m currently reading “Ready Player Two”, but if you want more mystery, I really liked “In a Dark,Dark Wood”, or I’m about to read “Plain Bad Heroines”"
