"This is book 5 in Disneys Villain Series. This story follows Mother Gothel (Rapunzel’s “mother”), from the time she was a child until her demise.
The story is truly as twisted and long and the hair at the center of the whole legend. A child taken from her parents and forced to grow up away from anything she was ever meant to know. She grows magical hair and imprisoned in a tower. The person holding her captive and old witch that calls herself her mother.
But why is Mother Gothel who she is? Why would she even believe that Rapunzel should live her life in a secluded tower? Does she really care about keeping Rapunzel safe from the cruel world, is there more to Mother Gothel? This follows the past of Mother Gothel to find out what she really knows and why it is that she feels like she knows best.
This is honestly one of my favorite books in the Villain Series so far. This follows the childhood of Mother Gothel. Her relationship with her mother, with her sisters, her magic, and the dead forest, all come into play as to how and why she stole Rapunzel. Was it for selfish reasons, was it because she wanted to live forever? Is Gothel really not as bad as she was made to seem? Or is she the same monster that Disney painted her?
This did make me have more respect for Gothel because it showed that an upbringing and a lot of trauma or even one negative decision can turn your life upside down. This book will make you question whether the villain is a true villain, or how the story could’ve been different with one tweak.
This just adds more character and depth to the villainous character and makes the princesses the background which I enjoy a bit of the more sinister approach. If you want more feeling and emotional story from the villains in Disneys stories, I suggest you check out this series."
"One of my favorite Disney movies of all time, Tangled, is the subject of this book. I loved seeing Mother Goethel's back story and how she tied into the universe that Serena Valentino has created. I really like that all the villains are interwoven throughout these books."
