Magic. Romance. Rivals. Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and Tamora Pierce. Before the age of seventeen, the young men and women of Jerar are given a choice --pursue a trade or enroll in a trial year in one of the realm's three war schools to study as a soldier, knight, or mage... For fifteen-year-old Ryiah, the choice has always been easy. Become a mage and train in Combat, the most prestigious faction of magic. Yet when she arrives, Ry finds herself competing against friend and foe for one of the exalted apprenticeships. Everyone is rooting for her to fail--first and foremost among them is Prince Darren, the school prodigy who has done nothing but make life miserable since she arrived. Will she survive, or will her dream go down in flames?

"I wanted to like this. I liked the idea behind it, the different schools, the competition. I liked the idea behind the competition the most. For me, this book missed the mark. Things might have been a bit better if I could have formed a connection with Ryiah, but I never did.

There's not much here in the story but the school itself. Where the story lost me was the repetitiousness of the school classes. The subjects of math, history and whatever else was a blimp on the radar except for the time Ryiah spend in the library. The rest focused on the impossible tasks of physical and magical exertion. It wasn't until the duel that we started to see any real rivalry between the first years. Even with rivalry, I was still bored.

I have been on the fence since finishing this, but I'm 80% sure I won't continue on to the next one. Maybe it was my expectation of this being more of a school than boot camp. How are the kids supposed to know what they can do if no one teaches them? This just lacked something to make me want to see how Ryiah's life went on from here."
