N. K. Jemisin
Assassin priests, mad kings, and the goddess of death collide in the first book of the Dreamblood Duology by NYT bestselling and three time Hugo-Award winning author N. K. Jemisin. The city burned beneath the Dreaming Moon.In the ancient city-state of Gujaareh, peace is the only law. Upon its rooftops and amongst the shadows of its cobbled streets wait the Gatherers -- the keepers of this peace. Priests of the dream-goddess, their duty is to harvest the magic of the sleeping mind and use it to heal, soothe . . . and kill those judged corrupt. But when a conspiracy blooms within Gujaareh's great temple, Ehiru -- the most famous of the city's Gatherers -- must question everything he knows. Someone, or something, is murdering dreamers in the goddess' name, stalking its prey both in Gujaareh's alleys and the realm of dreams. Ehiru must now protect the woman he was sent to kill -- or watch the city be devoured by war and forbidden magic.

"Beautiful writing. I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I enjoyed that the author didn’t waste time explaining every little detail of the world building to us, but it meant I spent the first 60 pages getting violently ripped out of the story telling every time I had to pause and really focus on if the odd word presented was a person, place, or thing. Once I finally settled in I found the story to move too slow for my tastes. If you’re a more patient person than me you’ll love this book- a story that tries the answer the question “if you did bad things for the right reason are you truly corrupt?” While exploring love as redemption. "NK Jemisin is officially my favorite author and I never thought I'd ever be able to say that definitively about any author. I first read her Inheritance Trilogy which was PHENOMENAL and I did not expect the Dreamblood series to capture me the same way... but it absolutely did. This series is a MUST READ. Such vivid world creation. I love the way that every character is so real; so lovable yet so flawed. Could not recommend more highly!<3<3<3"
"I love fantasies, partly because I love to be immersed in a different world. Jemisin constructed a well-built world, but unfortunately plunged the reader in with no guidance. Sure, there is a glossary at the end, but the definitions do not help, and with fantasies, I prefer to learn the world through context clues, not constantly flipping back to the glossary which really disrupts the flow. I found myself lost too many times that I stopped caring and just kept reading, whether I understood what was happening or not."
