"Actual: 3.5 stars ✨
To start off, this book really reminded me a lot of a book I read last year [b:The Duke|958535|The Duke (Knight Miscellany, #1)|Gaelen Foley|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1403192132l/958535._SY75_.jpg|1104093], in both plot and general feel. They both deal with a ruined woman down on her luck because of mismanagement of funds and has to turn to prostitution or what they call “mistressing” in order to survive.

I enjoyed myself to begin with when reading this, however, a lot of the emotional payoff at the end did not feel earned. This was especially true with the backstory of the Duke of Warrington (Nate), where his first wife and son die in childbirth as well as his family abandoning him. I feel like the author should have picked one or the other for the reason why he couldn’t commit. It was a double whammy that wasn’t addressed pretty much at all, which annoyed me because if you are going to write it into the storyline, deal with it appropriately with both main characters. Also, the bad guy Mr. Lawrence was cartoonishly bad, not very original and I could see from a mile away what was going to happen. It’s a shame that the last 20-30% was like this because up until that point, I was really enjoying myself.

However, I am looking forward to the next two books in the series because they feature Marian’s sisters’ stories, Charlotte and Nora. When this book ended, I thought she was just going to end up with the Pembroke boy she was previously betrothed to before the family lost everything. Looks like that isn’t happening though. I also want to see what their brother is doing, is he going to get his own book I wonder?!"
