"This was incredibly sweet. There is drama but honestly mostly just a sweet romance. Totally written for women and I suspect by a woman. It hits way too well on certain points. The show had a good speed. It had to cover a lot of time in a short number of episodes and I feel like they did a good job. I don't feel like anything was rushed nor dragged out for too long. Although by her 7th engagement I was really starting to question how her brother and Nurhaci could continue this plot. The other leaders can't be dumb enough to keep falling for it. I was glad they decided 7 engagements were enough and moved the plot along. If you are looking for a sweet palace drama without too much catty concubines this is for you. Spoilers ahead.....
Huang Tai Ji is male perfection in a period drama that usually cannot provide such a loyal male lead. Though they did him dirty as his modern day reincarnation at the end. Dong Ge had good character growth. She struggled with her fate in life and didn't take that for granted in her new life as You Ran. My only disappointment for her was she never had a child. It was one of her greatest regrets and struggles during her first life as she was 34 by the time she finally was free to be with Huang Tai Ji and diagnosed as infertile. They spent quite a bit of time showing her struggles with not having her own child. When she got a redo thanks to the shaman in a strange reincarnation plot, I had hoped that she could finally have a child of her own and achieve that dream. I also would have been ok with seeing her raise Ge Dai's baby. I was happy to see her character grow more content with life and see her and Huang Tai Ji end happy together but was sad not to see this dream achieved in her new healthy, young body.
I do not normally enjoy the modern person in a period drama but I liked this one. Modern day Yu Ran is the writer of the story and the times modern information comes in, she tries to fix it. "
