"I actually remember when this happened. I was a junior in high school. It was terrible. Everyone was very shocked and upset about what he said. What I remember is that people were upset with him once the truth came out. It was how dare he say that. Unfortunately, he wasn't alone in making up the facts to deter the police investigation. This was a time when carjacking was frequently on the news and several people were blaming minorities for their crimes because they thought they would get away with it. Unfortunately, it was unnoticed until this unfolded, though I remember a woman who buckled her kids in the car and drowned them claiming a minority carjacked her, I don't remember which came first. Fortunately, the stories we now know were untrue have come to light. It's so sad that these people were harassed based on a lie. Not only that, but that the police seemed to know who they wanted to blame it on. They generalized and chose a victim and caused so much distress."
