The Garden: Commune or Cult

On 22 acres of backcountry land in the American South lies The Garden - a community that lives by its own laws, free from the pressures of modern society. They maintain an open-door policy to anyone seeking to join their ranks, but new people must submit to an initiation period. Some barely last a week, others are forced to leave, and a chosen few will call The Garden home for good. Questions continue to arise about the cult-like vibes of the controversial community, but this spring is different. Cameras have been granted unprecedented access to The Garden, documenting its spread to new locations deep in the Ozarks. Founded as a cooperative, "leaderless" community, The Garden could be viewed as a post-apocalyptic wonderland free of societal rules.

"This series is actually super cool! It’s cool to see different people show up and their mindset compared to others. (As I’m sure reviews will vary as well) I’m only on the 5th episode but so far? I think it’s definitely more of a commune more than a “cult”. People just wanna live off grid, live like hippies, have a chill community and be free. Is what I get from it anyways. Not all members agree with others and that causes the boat to rock. Their council aspect I understand-ish. For something to work you all have to agree. BUTT if someone doesn’t like you, then most of the time.. the rest of the team doesn’t want you there. That’s the only “cult like” vibe I’ve gotten from watching this, thus far. Super cool! 7.5/10 ⭐️ **update** as I further watch the show.. there is definitely cult like tendencies!!!! Whosa’!"
"2023. 1-season, 6-episodes. I just have to decide for myself if it’s a commune or cult. I haven’t watched enough yet to decide…
Update: Did some reading and one describes it well:
“If you're thinking you'll get a documentary on a controversial cult or a series that dives deeply into the functions and operations of an intentional living commune, you'll be disappointed like me.
If you like the manufactured drama of reality tv, this might be for you.”
