Set in high school but styled like a classic film noir, this captivating mystery follows Brendan, a sharp, solitary student who avoids the usual high school cliques and chaos. His quiet life is shattered when his ex-girlfriend Emily is found dead in a storm drain—just two days after she made a panicked, cryptic call to him from a payphone. Determined to uncover the truth, Brendan teams up with the school’s resident genius, "Brain," and dives into the tangled social web of jocks, stoners, and alluring drama kids. As he digs deeper, Brendan uncovers a sinister underworld lurking beneath the surface—one far darker and more dangerous than he ever expected.

"Such a fantastic first outing for director Rian Johnson. The dialogue is the real stand out. Everyone talks like they're in "The Maltese Falcon," but they're teenagers in a high school so every scene that would feel old hat ends up feeling fun and exciting. Still holds up after all these years and a stronger murder mystery than "Glass Onion" or "Knives Out.""
"Takes little bit of getting used to the 40’s detective noir lingo in a more modern day setting. But once you catch on, it’s a thrilling dive into the seedy underbelly of a high school ecosystem filled with thugs, burnouts, and femme fatales. All being navigated expertly by a captivating central performance by JGL doing his best Philip Marlowe impression. "

"Great neo-noir movie that is a little dark but a little tongue-in-cheek the whole time. Pulp-fiction plus Twin Peaks plus South Park"

"It's a Sam Spade-esque hardboiled detective mystery in a highschool setting. They play it straight, there are a few funny/campy parts, but for the most part they commit to the premise and it works with a smidge of suspension of disbelief. Even the slang used in the movie could have been cheesy, but it all clicks really nicely with the performances."
