"Another film on my watchlist for a long time (it just came on Amazon Prime in the US today (September 1)), and what an incredible film this is! This film does a great job of putting you in the headspace of someone who was wrongfully accused of a terrorist act that he did not commit, and not to mention effectively showing the blatant injustice and misconduct that occurred in this case. Phenomenal performances, especially from Daniel Day-Lewis, Corin Redgrave, Pete Postlethwaite and Emma Thompson. Equally incredible is the direction and screenplay that never loses focus on the humanity. This film received a lot of Oscar nominations (Picture, Director, acting nominations for Day-Lewis, Postlethwaite, and Thompson, and more), and all of them were extremely well deserved in this case. This is a film that everyone should watch.
Having seen a handful of Daniel Day-Lewis films, I have to remark at his ability to disappear into his roles, ranging from Daniel Plainview in THERE WILL BE BLOOD, Billy the Butcher in GANGS OF NEW YORK, and Abraham Lincoln in LINCOLN. It is easy to see why this man is so widely celebrated, not to mention remains the only ever male actor to win the Best Actor Oscar 3 times. Also, having finally seen all 5 movies in the Best Picture lineup of 1993 (SCHINDLER'S LIST (which won), IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE FUGITIVE, THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, and THE PIANO), what a year for movies, and that an incredible group of nominees that year too! Equally incredible lineup in Best Actor that year too, with Liam Neeson (SCHINDLER'S LIST), Daniel-Day Lewis (IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER), Anthony Hopkins (THE REMAINS OF THE DAY) and Tom Hanks (PHILADELPHIA) all competing against each other (haven't seen Laurence Fishburne in WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? yet) where any one of them would've been deserving (Hanks won the Oscar that year, while my personal pick is the remarkably understated Hopkins in a very close call over Day-Lewis and Hanks)."
