"This is a stunningly beautiful film, visually and musically. Though it is clear that Andra Day lifts the entire story here with an absolutely brilliant, transcendent performance, the entire cast is also just wonderful. This film has a few misses, but what is goes well it does really, really well. It’s a powerful examination of not only the life of a talented and complicated artist but of very present history in this country, a lesson in racist power and the lives destroyed because of that violence. We see how the music lives on beyond the life, and it is impactful to see what predates and sets up the context for the civil rights movement. So worth watching."
"Such a tragic story. On top of being a drug addict, being targeted by the government made her life so much harder. "
