"I think John Barrymore was a very attractive Sherlock Holmes. However, I found the plot almost impossible to follow. The dialogue was difficult to read because it left the screen too quickly and there was less explanation than the one made in 1916 with William Gillette. I also frown upon their choice of even using the similar storyline with Sherlock Holmes falling in love. It felt uninspired and unoriginal, and very far from the Sherlock Holmes we knew from the stories. Still, it was one of the originals and I noticed that Basil Rathbone seemed to copy many of John Barrymore’s expressions and gestures, either because he was inspired or great minds think alike. "
