"A wonderful and heartfelt film of the exploration of the meaning of home to people, looking at it through an elderly woman looking to see her childhood home one last time before she dies, and the friendship she develops with a young woman she meets along the way. While the screenplay does not escape the feel of a play (which it is based on), it is still fantastic overall, with phenomenal performances as well (particularly by Geraldine Page as the elderly lady and Rebecca De Mornay as the young woman).
Being the first Geraldine Page film I’ve seen, her talent was evident and it is easy to see why she was so acclaimed at the time. This movie also finally got Geraldine her long overdue Oscar, her only ever win on her 8th nomination (and an enthusiastic standing ovation from the crowd too). While I’m so happy she got her flowers while she was still alive (she passed away just one year after her win), it does present a gut wrenching dilemma as I felt Whoopi Goldberg also deserved the win for THE COLOR PURPLE which was the same year as well (wish they both tied). Nevertheless, a great performance to win on. Highly recommended."
