"Just when I think I have seen most or all of Boris Karloff's movies, I find another one. In this thriller, Karloff stars as Dr. Thomas Bolton. He is an English doctor, whose son is also a doctor in the same theater. Dr. Bolton senior wants to prove, beyond the shadow for doubt, that surgery performed on humans can be pain-free, in the time when the horrors of surgery were watched by an audience of students, and patients screaming from surgical pain was common. There is a lot to like here. The tone of the plot is still a thriller, with a touch of horror. Instead, the horror comes from inside. As Dr. Bolton tries to find a solution to pain-free surgery, he eventually becomes addicted to his new anesthesia, causing damage to his friends and village. The acting was good. A little bit over the top, but that is to be expected from a Karloff movie."
