"a really sweet documentary about one of the most venerable lesbian bars in san fran closing in the late 80's. VERY low-budget, a somewhat shaky transfer from VHS, but homemade and clearly heartfelt. i admit my trans hackles go up when i hear about the daughters of bilitis on account of what happened to beth elliot in the emergence of TERFs (and TERFs haven't updated their playbook in fifty years). but Del and Phyllis seemed really cool! and they tried to include democratically.
i was also excited to see our friend elliott blackstone again, from 'screaming queens'! (he's also mentioned in stryker's 'transgender history', and was apparently hated by his own police department and they tried to plant drugs on him because of COURSE they would.)
i also really enjoyed the discussion of white male privilege in the gay community and discussions of diversity and inclusivity in lesbian spaces. was there a bit of judgement about promiscuity? yes. were there also 'white-only' gay bars and the familiar slogans of 'no gay asians'?? also yes. judge the racism, not the amount of sex, is my stance."
