"Witty, innuendo-laden comedy-musical set in the ancient Roman Empire. Hilarious performances and writing. The audience will know these character archetypes before viewing, allowing them to jump straight into the comedy. Great music, as you'd expect from Sondheim. The opening number is so catchy that, even though I last watched the movie months ago, the song started playing in my head a moment ago, which is what prompted me to make this post. "
"It is comedy first, musical second and a story third. While I did enjoy watching this film, I prefer seeing the musical live since that was the way I first saw it."

"A great film adaptation of the Sondheim musical. I could talk about it for a while. The dialogue is witty and full of dry-humored inuendos, perfectly combined to the tones of the songs. The players are all great comedians, especially Zero Mostel and Jack Gilford. Also Buster Keaton's last film. "
