"Sadly, it didn't have the story it needed to. It's completely obvious to everyone why certain characters don't return & the way they handle it kind of sucks. It seems like a cheap ploy.
Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea. But the effort doesn't seem to really be there. That doesn't mean they aren't clearly trying to bring as many people back as they can. They do. It's just that their parts are written horribly. Nothing feels natural. Not the story, progression, dialogue, acting, or even the conflicts. Everything feels like it was thrown together in a day.
Power Rangers has always been for kids, so the acting was often overdone or just cringey, but this seemed to be taken to another level. I felt like I was watching a high school play half the time but on understudy night.
The fights, though, are well choreographed if you ignore the parts at the beginning.
I never cared much for the original series. I loved what it started & can watch certain episodes, but other ranger shows like Dino Thunder will still be my favorite. I'm sure the rangers Rita captures has some hidden meaning too so maybe there is more effort to the story than I thought.
Part of me did have the idea they can't do this kind of movie without Tommy, but the other part thought the ranger legacy can't die with one person. Even if that person truly held up the franchise in unknown ways. But due to the film dates they could've had Tommy, they chose not to. Which explains some things about his passing.
Despite all of that, if they had just dealt with every characters real life death & used it for the story instead of sticking them as toys on a shelf, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to watch. It would feel more authentic & less like a cover-up. Trini's storyline worked because they didn't try to fake it.
I appreciate what they tried to do & not all of it is horrible. The ending was entirely predictable but good. I just think the entire thing could've gone through 3 more rounds of editing at least."
"If you’re a Power Rangers fan, you need to see this! For only an hour long, the special is right and concise, but it wasn’t rushed. It was great to see my childhood heroes back together again, and see how Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank were honored was fantastic to see. When the OG Rangers were talking about Trini, I could see the actors getting emotional and I could see they still feel her loss. I grew up with these characters, and seeing them return for this special to continue their story was a great treat to see. I know it’s fan-service-y, but we all know what we’re all getting into when we push play. Overall, a fun hour to spend with a great deal of nostalgia and seeing how our childhood heroes turned out was fun and exciting to see!"
