How do you feel about the use of AI in films, documentaries and tv shows?

Jojo Indifferent. To me, it has the potential to enhance stories told by humans. But I feel it also robs humans of genuine creativity and critical thinking skills. As a result, I'm pretty meh on it.

Craig S. The simplest answer from me is that it's just simply another tool in the creators belt that is as good as the person wielding it

Audrey I started the documentary, Endurance, about Ernest Shackleton. It contains footage that's over 100 years old, prompting me to look up if it was enhanced with AI. It was, but I can't tell which parts. I wish they would put a small word at the bottom identifying the AI parts because I can't tell what is real footage and what is enhanced.

Naomi I also watched the Endurance documentary. It’s my understanding that the footage is all real footage but the narration is voiced by AI using samples of the actual voices to read their own journal entries. I thought this was an amazing idea and really enhanced the quality of the show. I didn’t mind the use of AI in this situation but I think it should definitely be disclosed and specifically detailed to what is authentic footage/photos/voices and what is not.

Brandon Reed It takes the art of others and synthesizes it into something new without creating anything new and without crediting the original creators. I'm opposed.

Brandon Reed Additionally, my cadence and word choice when writing is apparently similar to that used by many AI programs. As a result, many people think that I use AI at times when I don't, and that frustrates me.

Brandon Reed As far as I know, no one's ever run my writing through an AI detection program. It's just been an off-the-cuff comment. But, yeah, I've also read that false positives are common and that people's professional and, particularly, academic careers have been ruined by them.

Errika Mason This is a tough one. I have seen a few TV series that have made use of A.I. subtitles, narration, and even character voice acting. It is strange to say the least. My gripe is that the A.I. is taking some voice acting jobs away, which was a large part of the reason behind the actors strike. But using it to make subtitles? I am not sure if any human is hurt by that. I literally saw an animated show last evening called Lazarus on Max Streaming that gave an A.I. a character credit! 😲 I don't like that part of it.

Brandon Reed I didn't realize that Lazarus was using an AI voice. I can often tell. That one must be really convincing.

Errika Mason Oh! I am so glad that I got it wrong! Thank you for correcting me, Brandon. 😁

Ryan I think it’s going to wash out a lot of the artistic community but I don’t think there’s anything that can stop it. It’s so cheap and prolific, how long are studios going to say no when it can massively reduce their headcounts and costs? Even if they do, tech companies will create A.I. centered production companies to force their hand. The way people gobble up the LCD, written for the algorithm, dreck Netflix often pushes, I have no faith in consumers being discerning about the lower quality, A.I. created, movies and shows.
