"A magical tale unlike anything you've read before." —Bustle"[A] richly imagined 19th-century historical fantasy." —EW, A-The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary. Her life might well be over. In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells. As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romani, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever. “A fast-paced historical fantasy full of magic, romance, and adventure!”—JESSICA DAY GEORGE, New York Times bestselling author of Silver in the Blood

"I truly appreciated a number of aspects of the book that made this more than just a fun to read fantasy, but I also liked the simply fun to read fantasy of it too.

First and foremost, I loved how accessible they made a story of intercultural love and the true ignorance and racist conditioning that the more privileged person (ie white person most often) has to challenge within themselves and overcome. I appreciated that Gábor had no qualms about shoving Anna’s insulting ignorance in her face when they first met. I liked that Anna had to learn and I liked that she was willing to learn and paid attention to her own internalized racism when Gábor challenged her. I really appreciated that the author used this historical fantasy which could easily have been all magic and fantastical creatures and silly romances to teach about the historic discrimination against the Romani people.

I’ve read a number of reviews about how silly and stupid for boys the MC, Anna, was. I, however, liked the balance of Anna’s coming to learn who she is and what she stands for with her dumb decisions around boys and love/lust for them. I found the romance sprinkled throughout the book quite realistic for a girl who was just 16. I think some readers forget they’re reading YA when judging character development. How well informed were you at 16? Anyway, I found Anna to be strong willed and though she fumbled about, it was through a true coming of age during a rebellion, finding out she’s a chimaera, realizing she was taught to be racist against Romani while simultaneously falling in love with a Romani boy that nearly everyone in her family looks down on... AND going into another world and facing monsters and magical creatures. Meanwhile, everyone tries to control her because of the power they know she has, but she doesn’t understand.

I listened to this on audiobook and I’d definitely recommend it, particularly to young girls."
