An epic, romantic, and action-packed fantasy inspired by the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, about a bastard princess who must take on an evil fae to save her brother’s soul, from C. J. Redwine, the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen. Perfect for fans of Graceling and the Lunar Chronicles. The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown. So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself. But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

"I think C.J. Redwing has a real talent for fairytale retelling! I've been pleasantly surprised by her plots and never felt like anything happened simply because it did in the original. Now I think the book really missed out on a chance to create a strong sibling bond between Ari and her twin. And the romance felt a bit rushed and out of place at times. A very enjoyable book overall!"
"I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. It's includes a kingdom, kind of like a crime boss, making wishing repaying debts. If you like fairytales I say go for it. It has similarities to the original but has enough twists and turns to make it a completely different story. It isn't a long read at all. Its also a series but an unconnected series (exists in the same world but the stories in each book aren't linked together). If you like Rumpel or fairytales or enjoy shows like Once Upon a Time, I recommend"
"Oh wow this book was so good! I’m loving this series although I’m reading it very out of order, it’s incredible.
Okay so let’s start with the main characters. Thad is kind of boring but tolerable, Cleo was cute but we didn’t learn too much about her. BUT. Ari and Sebastian and Teague were MASTERPIECES. Like a kinda chubby but very confident-in-herself heroine who’s brave and caring YES PLEASE! A tall mysterious handsome guy who has ptsd and maybe autism OKAY CJ REDWINE I SEE YOU! And the most incredible villain of all time like he’s creepy and he’s evil and he has a sad backstory... HON.
I liked the story too. I never really knew the story of Rumplestiltskin or however you spell it except from once upon a time, which is not really how the story goes, so it was fun to learn it from this book in this kinda fantasy way. I loved how Sebastian was able to do all those things with a good heart and stay although I was internally screaming “no Sebastian don’t do it!!!” The romance was great, slow, just how I like it. And Ari is my queen, I am her, we are the same. I love that she’s trapped in a tower and basically about to die and she’s like bitch I need bacon like honestly relatable. The end where she figured out she needed to learn Teagues name to defeat him felt a little rushed but I enjoyed it nonetheless, it felt like a real climax like OMG ITS ABOUT TO GO DOWN UP IN HERE!!
All in all I really enjoyed it (couldn’t you tell?) I loved the plot, the characters and I would maybe give it 4.5 stars but let’s be real I love it and am biased so full 5. I only have the traitor prince left in this series to read and I’m excited to start it.
Anyways that’s my review, I’ll get better at them eventually but as of now it’s just a thought dump, so. Yeah. Enjoy, I guess"
