A house of haunted history and ill temper. Make yourself at home in this beguiling novel of love, magic, and danger by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg. Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home--until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever. Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it's in Merritt's best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she'll need to move in, too. Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda's work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house's secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren't their only concern--something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

"SPOILER ALERT: I liked this book but for me it was a 3.75 rating. I found it took almost 200 pages for the book to take off and wrap me in. I also had a tough time with the disturbing images of the people who got all shriveled up. I will continue reading the series because I want to know what happens next. And I will read other books by this author too."

"<strong>A book as enchanted as the title</strong><br/><br/>I thought this book was a sweet story and I liked the idea that magic has a limit based on your lineage. I would recommend this book to anyone, except maybe young readers who might not be able to grasp some of the concepts in this book."
"Spoilers ahead!! Tone was a bit weird. The main storyline had interesting magic and was quite humorous. The characters were interesting and the story pulled me in. The secondary storyline however was very dark, and unexpectedly graphic/violent. Then partway through the story, the "main character" from the dark storyline popped up to the main storyline as the villain, matching the light/funny vibes. From then on, the secondary storyline was romance. I'm not opposed to romance in fantasy, but it was a very abrupt shift from no romance to SO MUCH pining and misunderstandings and longing and angst. In the end I was fine with the characters ending up together, but their romance really seemed to come out of nowhere."

"Love the characters in this series. The villain had me so uptight I’d have to pause and go do something then come back to it. Great story. So happy to have discovered it."
