"The last two Garrett books have felt like they were putting the series away. This is usually a good thing in long-running series, as eventually, it becomes a burden on the writer and as more and more leftover bits come into play, it becomes cumbersome.
But with Bones, Cook seems to be dusting off the Garrett series. While not the strongest novel in the series, Bones does manage a good, involving yarn, deal with aging issues, set up the series with new possibilities. This feels much like an older Garrett novel, Pre Red Iron Nights, perhaps.
It does suffer from some pacing issues, while it is likely very realistic for Garrett to stand by his wounded friends bed for days, it feels like we spend too much time there and not enough going out and doing, you know, detective stuff.

The novel begins with Garrett being forced back into his old life, and meeting up with old friends. This book is just like that. People you know of old, but haven't seen in a long time, and are not sure what they are now. There is enjoyment, caution, and a bit of uncomfortness in reading this book. Which is just how it should be."
