"I admit I could not bring myself to finish this book :( I plan to but I had to take a break because I felt really frustrated. I love Holly Black. The Spiderwick Chronicles are some of my favorite books even now as an adult and I just love, love, LOVE how she brings the world of faeries to life. Every scene in this book with faeries in it was so beautiful and magical and creepy and disturbing. And her writing could be very haunting and poetic. Which is why I was SO frustrated to find I hated how she wrote characters in this book.
I care about absolutely no one in this book. They have no personality and they all talk exactly the same. Like robots. She doesn't put any animation into their words, their body language, anything. The main character, Kaye, is the worst. I usually have a really easy time picturing book characters in my head, creating an image out of what the author has given me. Except Holly Black gave basically nothing with any of these characters. I can't picture ANY of them. And that's really jarring, especially with how beautifully painted everything else is. The relationships in this story are lackluster and lack any soul whatsoever. The main romance is a ridiculous case of instalove with no chemistry. There's no reason for these characters to be so obsessed with each other! I just don't know how I'm supposed to care about these people or what happens to them. It makes me sad.
2 stars though for the FAE! They are perfectly perfect in every way! ✨️"
