"I wanted to quit after the first couple chapters because it was just so terrible. But I pushed through and finished it, and I regret every second I wasted on it. It doesn’t ever get any better, it doesn’t even ever get interesting."

"Such a fun idea but poorly executed, the plot happening to “the indie kids” is shown in a small passage in the beginning of each chapter and that’s really it. The author could’ve done so much more with how the events around them affect our group of characters but instead he mentions the group’s diverse set of problems every once and a while and then makes the main character lash out in a unlikeable way. It’s not the worst book ever by any means but it could’ve been so much more. 7th grade me loved this book, despite my feelings towards this book now it was and still is a very important book to me.fantasy"
"Interesting idea. A book about what goes on in the background characters' lives in "indie" books. Sadly the book is pretty boring. There is no steady plot for this background characters that are this books main characters. Sure they have life issue, but the antagonist isn't fully there and so the plit doesn't really progress in an interesting fashion or at least any way to keep me really engaged. I am also troubled by the way sexuality is handled. Like the natracter has "fooled around" sexually with his best friend before yet he repeats multuple times that he is just straight. Uh no at best he would be bisexual. Missed opportunity. Overall the main characters isn't really likeable with his attitude and CRAZY obsessive jealousy. The real world is depressing enough I don't need a book where I am supposed to feel for the main character displaying toxic masculinity. "
"DNFing at 20 pages left because I just can’t read any more of this ****. Reads like a ****** fan fiction. There are ZERO stakes. ZERO! When people die the main characters just react in a “oh he was in my math class, bummer” kind of way. Whenever anything happens “oh the indie kids will fix it. They always have” and then the indie kids really do fix it. It started to get interesting after the zombie deer and the blue eyed cops but then....nothing. The characters motivations change with no regard with their personality or common sense. It makes no sense and nothing happens.

Also on to the more problematic things:

He has sex with his same sex gay friend regularly.... but keeps having rambling monologues about how “I’m not gay. I swear I’m not! I’ve had sex with two woman!”

He also talks several times about how he masturbates to the thought of his female friend. Oh but he’s “respectful” about it so don’t worry about it guys! He awkwardly pines after her the entire book. After acting like a total creep the entire time he finally manages to have sex with her. Directly after having sex with her he then decides that he doesn’t want anything serious with her. WHAT. THE. ****. He also brings up the fact that she’s a black woman a lot. Not a big deal but it made me uncomfortable."
