But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn’t forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.

"Personally, I’m not totally sure I enjoyed this. But I can see why others did and I enjoyed the writing style, jarring at times as it was.

I think the hardest thing for me is that I didn’t like any of the characters. Especially when told in first person, it’s difficult for me to love a book if I don’t like the narrator. I admired Elle, and I felt immense empathy for her, but I didn’t like her as a person.

I did almost have to stop reading this, but ultimately I’m glad I saw it through to the end."

"This book starts out quite steamy, which I don't mind.

This is a very descriptive writer that isn't boring. When it talks about the lake and how the Paper Palace was built, that's my favorite part. And when the characters are kids at the lake, I love those parts too. I miss being a kid during the summer.

This is one of those books that go back and forth in time, which can get confusing, but I never got confused with this one. I would read this again, this was a great story with many twists and turns. It's like watching your favorite movie over and over again, I would like to read this again someday.

This is worth the read, but this book does have sexual trauma. Happy reading."
"I really have no idea what to think of this book. At times, I loved it. I loved the connection that Elle and Jonas had as kids growing up, and their burning desire as adults. Other times I found it difficult to follow, as I found the story all over the place at times. I felt the book’s ending was extremely anti-climactic and left me disappointed.

Trigger warning: instances of sexual assault are covered."
"Couldn’t put it down because I kept thinking it was going to get better. It didn’t. Her writing is beautiful- very descriptive like Kristin Hannah and Delia Owens but the storyline was all over the place, random memories popped up but i oh wasn’t able to connect them to the actual story. It was just odd for me."
