Francesca Lia Block
Seventeen-year-old Penelope (Pen) has lost everything—her home, her parents, and her ten-year-old brother. Like a female Odysseus in search of home, she navigates a dark world full of strange creatures, gathers companions and loses them, finds love and loses it, and faces her mortal enemy. In her signature style, Francesca Lia Block has created a world that is beautiful in its destruction and as frightening as it is lovely. At the helm of Love in the Time of Global Warming is Pen, a strong heroine who holds hope and love in her hands and refuses to be defeated.

"This is based on The Odyssey with a female lead. A huge flood destroys everything Penelope has ever known and she sets out to see if anyone is still alive. She encounters friends, monsters, and self discovery in this magical realism novel. I love the details incorporated into the world and the cast of characters that FLB always manages to dream up, a bunch of whimsical weirdos that are along for the ride."
"I loved this book. It was part apocalyptic and part fantasy. The writing was excellent, poetic and not rushed. Even in scenes were there was action, the writing stayed constant and not rushed. The characters we learn about through them but also by visions that the main character has. Each one has special and wonderful gifts, both powers and artistic. The reviews are very mixed and you either loved it hated it, but for me it was a 5⭐️ read. It also has LBGTQ elements, but they are subtle and nothing is overdone.

And more so because of the orange butterfly. I hold out my arm. It alights there, fanning its wings as if it has landed on a flower, on a sunny day, on a living planet. It stays on my arm, ticklish and fragile as a breath, as I go forward.

Excerpt from: "Love in the Time of Global Warming" by Francesca Lia Block. "I think the best way to put this is that Francesca Lia Block's books are not my kind of weird, because I definitely have liked weird books but hers never hit a chord for me. I never can suspend my disbelief with the magical realism elements and I'm never invested in the characters so the only saving grace is the brevity of her works.

I know many people love her, so if you like her style from her previous books more than likely you'll like this one too."
