"I'm not exaggerating when I say cults are some of the scariest things I have ever read about. This book is basically an outline of what happens. People are cut off from society and manipulated, there is a leader with a God complex, and mindless drones that help circulate the lies. I just wish there was more meat to this story. It was very short and forgettable.

The key problem for me was nothing was elaborated on. You followed Piper a mindless drone who could not see past the blinders so the reader couldn't either. Also the author wrote like the reader didn’t know what was happening even though it was pretty obvious. All the characters were one dimensional and I couldn't find myself caring for any of them.

One of the best suprises while reading is to be shown a different perspective and in that perspective experience and see a situation in a different light. The greatest gift from an author is when you think to yourself "Well I never thought of it that way". That was not the case here. You were given exactly what a cult should be and then given the end that should inevitably follow.

In the credits the author explains her foundation for this book. It came from her own experiences as a teen with a religious group. And wow how cults and religion go hand and hand. I had that feeling from the beginning to be honest. What is the difference between cult and religion? Well about a hundred years."
"I went into this book knowing nothing. I haven’t even heard of this book before. I just picked it up because my library had the grab and go bags based on book genres. It was marked as a thriller. This book wasn’t a thriller. There was never a moment that you fear for any character’s life. I still enjoyed it though.

The book is about a teen girl named Piper that lived in a cult and she was recently taken away. This book goes back and forth between before and after Piper was in the cult. It does a great job of capturing Piper’s feeling about what just happened. She isn’t the greatest person but that is because she was brainwashed into believing the cult and she is taken away from everything she knows. In her mind she was kidnapped, so of course she wouldn’t be nice.

Reading this book you can tell that the author did a lot of research. She used to be in a cult like environment, so she knows a little bit. Plus the author read a lot of memoir and interviews of cult members from both kids and adults. She does a great job of showing the cult. The book is written from Piper’s point of view so it is easy to believe that the cult is good. It is very easy to see why Piper believes the cult leader.

There is a plot twist that is pretty easy to spot but i think that was done on purpose. It was supposed to be a “that makes sence” moment than shocking moment. It is easy to spot before Piper does but that was because Piper is still trying to figure things out."
