Fyodor Dostoyevsky
"One death, in exchange for thousands of lives - it's simple arithmetic!" A new translation of Dostoevsky's epic masterpiece, Crime and Punishment (1866). The impoverished student Raskolnikov decides to free himself from debt by killing an old moneylender, an act he sees as elevating himself above conventional morality. Like Napoleon he will assert his will and his crime will be justified by its elimination of "vermin" for the sake of the greater good. But Raskolnikov is torn apart by fear, guilt, and a growing conscience under the influence of his love for Sonya. Meanwhile the police detective Porfiry is on his trail. It is a powerfully psychological novel, in which the St Petersburg setting, Dostoevsky's own circumstances, and contemporary social problems all play their part.

"More punishment than anything but worth it."

"The cornerstone to understanding Dostoevsky’s philosophy. Probably the most accesible of his works and the concept of internal judgement and morality plays out in similar ways in his other novels. For readers just starting with him this is the place. However, I think it can also be enjoyed even if you read his other more complicated pieces first. #classics #dostoevsky "

"I love this book! I loved going insane with the main character! This book was definitely an old read and requires a focused reader and an open mind. This novel makes you question, what does murder feel like, while you’re waiting to see if you’re caught? Is murder acceptable if it betters the world? "

"One of the great Russian novels. An epic story worthy of people’s current obsession for true crime podcasts. Definitely worth a read !"

"Well. Managed to finally finish this one. Working night shift is rough.
Anyway, this book was odd to me. Just the way that things were described as events happened were in a way underwhelming. When it talked about the murder, I was thinking the way this is being described just doesn't feel shocking, and of course any time that a character dies should be shocking. A lot of the book read sort of like a movie script, in my opinion.

There were plenty of characters, it wouldn't be too hard to get lost in this book.
The reason I gave it 3 stars was because there were plenty of excellent points being made about life, crime, and murder that I never would've thought about on my own. I do feel that this book deserves a second chance because of the reading schedule that I was keeping, I only read when I had time, or I was just not mentally in the mood to be reading. I would like to give this book a second chance, it's not the book's fault that I went weeks without reading.

Happy reading"
