David Gemmell
“David Gemmell tells a tale of very real adventure, the stuff of true epic fantasy.”—R. A. SalvatoreDruss, Captain of the Ax, is the stuff of legends. Tales of his battles are told throughout the land, and the stories expand with each telling. But Druss himself grows older, until finally, the warrior turns his back on glory and retreats to his mountain lair. There he awaits his old enemy: death. But far below, the barbarian Nadir hordes are on the march. All that stands between them and the Drenai people is a mighty six-walled fortress, Dros Delnoch—a great citadel that seems destined to fall. If it does, the Nadir will sweep inexorably across the land, killing all who oppose them.Reluctantly Druss agrees to come down from his mountaintop to lead this last, hopeless fight. Lost causes mean nothing to him—he has fought in such battles a thousand times in a thousand lands. And he is a hero to inspire a new generation of warriors. He is Druss the Legend. Thus begins David Gemmell’s most celebrated novel—an unrivaled classic of mythic heroism and magnificent adventure. . . .

"Except for a deus ex machina near the end, David Gemmel's Legend (now a legend in the world of sword and sorcery literature) is nearly perfect. This is a pure story of mettle against mettle and metal against metal. The characters touchingly discuss mortality, courage, love duty, honor, life, beauty, and sacrifice in ways that stir the spirit as they prepare to defend and defend the first stronghold against a seemingly unstoppable invasion. Among the carnage and grim undertakings, our ensemble finds love and camaraderie. As I read, I felt the urge to take up my own sword against the Nadir horde. "
"This has got to be one of my favorite books now. This was amazing, and it got me started on reading more of David Gemmell's books. The story centers around an invasion and the efforts to hold it back. You could compare it to Spartans and Persians at the Thermopyle or the Battle of Helms Deep from LOTR, similar feel of a small force vs. huge force. The main characters we follow are Regnak, Virae, and Druss, amongst others. Regnak is a former soldier who is a baresark, someone who goes berserk in battle and loses control, making him initially not want to fight all together. Virae is the badass daughter of the Earl of Bronze, who runs into Regnak and the two fall in love. Druss is an aged warrior who is an absolute legend of a man. Druss is easily one of the best characters Gemmell ever wrote. There are plenty of other great characters we meet and follow throughout the story. Plenty of character building, world building, battles, tragedies, and funny dialogue. It's really a fantastic story and a must-read if you're a fantasy fan. Even if you're not, it might make you one."
