"Okay, let's be real, "Red Square" by Martin Cruz Smith isn't exactly a beach read. This book throws you into the icy depths of post-Soviet Russia, where things are… well, let's just say they're not exactly sunshine and rainbows.
Arkady Renko, our hero (or anti-hero, depending on the day), is a Moscow cop trying to keep his sanity amidst the chaos. Think crumbling infrastructure, shady businessmen, and a whole lot of vodka.
The plot is like a Russian nesting doll, you keep peeling back the layers, and there's always another surprise waiting inside. Smith keeps you guessing, and let me tell you, some of those twists will leave you scratching your head.
"Red Square" is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's dark, gritty, and more than a little depressing at times. But it's also incredibly captivating. Smith paints a vivid picture of a society in transition, and you can practically taste the vodka and smell the snow.
If you're looking for a thrilling and thought-provoking read, "Red Square" is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a wild ride.
Five out of five stars from this weary traveler.
