Ever since Martin Banks and his fellow computer geeks discovered that reality is just a computer program to be happily hacked, they've been jaunting back and forth through time, posing as medieval wizards and having the epic adventures that other nerds can only dream of having. But even in their wildest fantasies, they never expected to end up at the mercy of the former apprentice whom they sent to prison for gross misuse of magic and all-around evil behavior. Who knew that the vengeful Todd would escape, then conjure a computer game packed with wolves, wenches, wastelands, and assorted harrowing hazards--and trap his hapless former friends inside it? Stripped of their magic powers, the would-be wizards must brave terrifying dangers, technical glitches, and one another's company if they want to see Medieval England--and their favorite sci-fi movies on VHS--ever again. Can our heroes survive this magical mystery torture? Or will it only lead them and their pointy hats into more peril?

"I am enjoying this series (mostly) and the unique take on "magic". This particular book, though, was boring and even irritating. I'm ready for the characters to develop genuine friendships instead of just being jerks to each other all the time and calling themselves friends. The only one who seems to genuinely be growing and developing meaningful bonds is Roy. This story just kept dragging on, everyone bickering to the point where I can only think of maybe one or two times that someone was nice or polite to someone else for a reason other than to prove someone wrong. The only reason I can think of why these characters continue to be jerks is that all of the women (except two) that could be their equals, live somewhere else. Serious holes in this book - normally after such an ordeal, everyone ends up being closer because of it. Not this group. Even in the end, when they should have just said "Thank You" they were jerks. I loved the first two books, however, which is why I finished this one. I even feel like Luke Daniels regressed a bit in his narration of this book. Phillip started sounding too much like Owen, and I felt like even Luke was getting bored reading the book."
