Instant New York Times bestseller!A chilling twist on the “cursed film” genre from the bestselling author of The Pallbearers Club and The Cabin at the End of the World. In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot. The man who played “The Thin Kid” is the only surviving cast member. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the dangerous crossed lines on set that resulted in tragedy. As memories flood back in, the boundaries between reality and film, past and present start to blur. But he’s going to help remake the film, even if it means navigating a world of cynical producers, egomaniacal directors, and surreal fan conventions—demons of the past be damned. But at what cost? Horror Movie is an obsessive, psychologically chilling, and suspenseful feat of storytelling genius that builds inexorably to an unforgettable, mind-bending conclusion

"This felt like a classic. Atmospheric, unpredictable, and raw. The switch between timetables while the story slowly unraveled made it all the more unnerving. Cult-like followings have always intrigued me and this was no different. It's almost like the lack of film has made it all the more interesting.
The story was trying not to reveal too much so it was difficult to connect with the characters but it also made it more creepy. I enjoyed the description of the movie and what each shot means or how it made the watcher feel. The pacing never hitched and I was interested to know where this craziness was leading me to. I also appreciated the confusion at times. In the end, it just didn't wow me, and like I said I couldn't connect with the characters."
"Disappointed and bored. The amount of page long paragraphs lost my interest quickly. This was very sad in the end. I hated how beautifully written this was and how underwhelming it was at the same time. At some points this felt pretentious and like the narrator was almost trying to make you feel guilty for not understanding his wording because he felt very cocky in parts. I had high hopes for this book and was utterly let down. "
"I loved this audiobook until the last hour-ish. It started out as a really unique audiobook experience - theatrical, but meta. But I got annoyed by how many times the one narrator would stop and restart sentences. I get that it was supposed to sound like a real reading of the screenplay/script, but it was way overdone and really pulled me out of the story. I was hooked from the beginning and got really into the story, but it really fell off at the end for me. "
"This is my first work of Paul Tremblay’s, and I really liked how twisty it is. Funny enough, I read it instead of listening to it and though it was rambley at times it was definitely to add dimension to the story, which it does. It doesn’t play by the normal rules of wanting to please the reader with clean answers, this book is an EXPERIENCE ALL ITS OWN and I think the point is that everyone will get something different out of it."
"I'll be honest, even with the three star rating I'm giving the book, I'm still planning to recommend it to other horror fans I know.<br/><br/>I'm rating Horror Movie at three stars because the ending fell apart for me in a really bad enough way. Without the last chapter overshadowing all my previous enjoyment, I'd probably comfortably rate the book at a four or five star read. The presentation—which goes back and forth between the movie-that-wasn't's script and the narrator's account of what happened during filming and the years since—makes the novel a fun and fast read. I found much of the plot predictable (both the story and the story within the story), but I think that only increased the discomfort for me when it came to some of the tougher scenes.<br/><br/>I wouldn't say it's for everyone. And if you know you have certain triggers when it comes to reading horror, it may be worth skimming some content warnings other readers have posted here or on places like StoryGraph. (Especially if scenes of bullying are among your triggers!) But I recommend reading a sample of this book. If it's your cup of tea, you may find yourself devouring it in one day like I did. Just maybe consider skipping the last bit."
