Winnie-the-Pooh meets The Blair Witch Project in this very grown-up tale of a camping trip gone horribly awry. Twelve six-year-olds and their three adult chaperones head into the woods on a camping trip. None of them make it out alive. The Laws of the Skies tells the harrowing story of those days in the woods, of illness and accidents, and a murderous child. Part fairy tale, part horror film, this macabre fable takes us through the minds of all the members of this doomed party, murderers and murdered alike. “Excellent...crystalline." —New York Times, Summer Reads

""Without an adult, reality suddenly dissolved."

The Laws of the Skies is a chilling & gruesome horror novella that came highly recommended by my friends Audra & Mindi, so I had to grab a copy. It is somewhat reminiscent of Lord of the Flies, but it's still very different. Lord of the Flies has a heavy focus on building a system, and The Laws of the Skies concentrates on chaos over a weekend.

This book is fairly violent and gory, and I don't recommend this book for people who aren't okay with body horror. The Laws of the Skies gets super grim, so don't expect a happy story here.

It took me a bit to get used to the writing, but eventually I liked it. The storylines bleed into each other seamlessly, and it was jarring at first when there were no page or chapter breaks.

My big issue with this book is that writing the characters as 6 years old seemed completely unbelievable. They acted older than 6, it I kept getting distracted when the age didn't fit with what was going on. I also felt like one character's development was totally unrealistic for a 6 year old because it would take a few more years to become the way he was, and 6 just seemed too young. I'm avoiding specific details so that I don't give anything away.

I enjoyed reading this dark novella. It's a memorable story, but it's definitely not going to be for everyone. If this sounds like something you would be into, don't miss out on The Laws of the Skies!"
