"DNF 20%. I got a fifth of the way through the book before confessing I didn’t care what happened to the men in this modern-day quasi-Gangs of New York in Providence RI. Another book that fails the Alison Bechdel test: Do we meet two or more women characters? Do they speak to one another? Do they talk about something other than men? No, no and no."
"Loved it. One woman causes all the families to fall apart and go to war. #BooksWorthReading #A+Books"

"Pretty good book about Danny Murphy who works for the Irish mob and how he has to save his family from the mob war with the Italians. Takes place around the Boston MA area. A few good twists in the story that keep it interesting. Only criticism I have is that it can be hard to keep track of all the different characters."
"I loved Don Winslow's Cartel trilogy; gave all of them 5 stars. Therefore, I know that he knows how to write good dialogue, tension, shock and awe, etc. Where was that in this first installment of the Danny Ryan trilogy?

The dialogue was blasé. Contrived. Too simple. I feel like every great "gangster" story has that moment where two people are sitting down together and they have a conversation that changes your perspective on the characters and alters the trajectory of the entire story. Think of Michael in the restaurant before he kills Sollozzo in The Godfather or Neil and Hanna meeting up in the diner in Heat. There's no deep conversation to be had here, no defining moment that propels the story forward. You could argue that that moment is Pat's death, but even that felt too cut and dry.

The plot also moves too quickly and too much of it is jam-packed in this relatively short book. I just don't know what else can possibly happen in the 2nd and 3rd book. The 3 stars are for the actual root of the story. The idea of a low level mobster working his way up and everything unraveling in front of his eyes will always be intriguing. Just wish the execution was better."
