Wilderness survival is the name of the game as the line blurs between reality TV and reality itself in this fast-paced novel of suspense in the vein of Yellowjackets. “Taut, tense, and at times almost unbearably real.”—Ruth Ware, author of One by One She wanted an adventure. She never imagined it would go this far. It begins with a reality TV show. Twelve contestants are sent into the woods to face challenges that will test the limits of their endurance. While they are out there, something terrible happens—but how widespread is the destruction, and has it occurred naturally or is it man-made? Cut off from society, the contestants know nothing of it. When one of them—a young woman the show’s producers call Zoo—stumbles across the devastation, she can imagine only that it is part of the game. Alone and disoriented, Zoo is heavy with doubt regarding the life—and husband—she left behind, but she refuses to quit. Staggering countless miles across unfamiliar territory, Zoo must summon all her survival skills—and learn new ones as she goes. But as her emotional and physical reserves dwindle, she grasps that the real world might have been altered in terrifying ways—and her ability to parse the charade will be either her triumph or her undoing. Sophisticated and provocative, The Last One is a novel that forces us to confront the role that media plays in our perception of what is real: how readily we cast our judgments, how easily we are manipulated.Praise for The Last One“[Alexandra] Oliva brilliantly scrutinizes the recorded (and heavily revised) narratives we believe, and the last one hundred pages will have the reader constantly guessing just what Zoo is capable of doing to find her way back home.”—Washington Post“A high-concept, high-octane affair . . . The conceit is undoubtedly clever and . . . well executed, but what makes The Last One such a page-turner is Zoo herself: practical, tough-minded and appealing.”—The Guardian“Oliva takes this (possibly) post-apocalyptic setting, grafts on a knowledgeable skewering of the inner workings of reality television and gives us a gripping story of survival. . . . This is the genius of Oliva’s storytelling. . . . [She] makes a stunning debut with this page turner, and becomes a writer to watch.”—Seattle Times“Oliva delivers a pulse-pounding psychological tale of survival. . . . [She] masterfully manipulates her characters and the setting, creating a mash-up of popular TV genres: Survivor meets The Walking Dead.”—Bookpage

"I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book! I finished it in about 24 hours - the concept is so fun and I had to find out what happened. The main character is on a survival reality show, and at some point, a pandemic occurs and the real world falls apart...the contestants have no idea and think it's part of the show. In my mind, it's like Tropic Thunder meets (adult) Hunger Games, and that's an awesome combination.

I liked the main character. She fought to survive (whether real or not), and studied and practiced before she came in. She had real emotions and was multi-layered. I appreciate that.

The book has alternating chapters - what's happening in the real world (that the main character thinks is fake), and what led up to that (which was fake). Even though it's a disaster scenario, it was amusing to know what was going on when the main character didn't.

This book could have been a complete wreck, but Oliva pulled it off. It was creative, and I genuinely enjoyed reading it."
"I love books that feature reality tv going very wrong, and this fits that description. It’s probably not the book you should be reading as a corona virus is breaking out though...Even though the main character believes everything happening is part of the reality show and is isolated, it really takes her way too long to figure out what is truly going on in the world. It was a fun ride though and I liked how it ended, although I see a lot of goodreads people did not."
"This is the fourth book in the Love at Last series and the only one that I have read. I would recommend that readers check out the first three before reading this one as it would help understand the ancillary characters, who play a huge part in this plot, a lot more.

Anya is an independent woman who has a strong distrust for any and all men in her orbit. She doesn't mind a night of fun, but anything more is off the table. Owen was supposed to be a safe hookup--only in two for a couple of weeks--until the worst happens: he gets a full time position at the local fire station and Anya winds up pregnant. What follows is the story of a man desperate to capture the heart of a woman who doesn't believe in love.

I think that I needed a bit more backstory for Anya early on in the book because by the time I learned about what made her tick, I had already established her as an irredeemably cruel character. I found it hard to believe that the people around her would want to continue being her close friend as her negativity and distrust of those around her seemed to permeate every single relationship and interaction.

Again, I think I would have a different perspective on this novel if I had read the previous three in the series first as I believe that would have been helpful to character development.

Thank you to NetGalley for the digital advanced reader copy!"
"This was a really great apocalyptic book. I was worried that this was going to be too much like the Hunger Games at first but it is very different. The only thing that made this a 4 instead of a 5 was I wanted more about the pathogen and what things were like in the outside world. I did like that the reader is kept in the dark about what is happening until the same time the contestants find out."
