Pablo Neruda
First published in 1924, "Viente Poemas de Amor y una Cancion Desperada remains among Neruda's most popular work. Daringly metaphorical, these poems are based upon his own private associations. Their sensuous use of nature symbolism to celebrate love and to express grief has not been surpassed in the literature of our century. This edition offers the original Spanish text, with masterly translations by W.S. Merwin on facing pages.

"I’m not going to lie: my first and only formal introduction to Pablo Neruda was via How I Met Your Mother. I won’t even pretend to be embarrassed, because it’s my favorite show and quite frankly, my high school literature courses clearly failed me if that’s really the first time I had heard of a Nobel Prize winning poet. That being said, I was just talking to a book club member about how I never read poetry, so I figured why not start with one of the greatest? I’m still not totally sure if I “get” poetry, but the language (at least in the translation I read) was undeniably beautiful, and it makes me wish I understood enough Spanish to read these in their original form."
