"Whew! A Thomas Lynley mystery with well-drawn detective and criminal characters, with much of the story revolving around FGM (female genital mutilation). It seemed to take a year to read the 700 pages during the five weeks I borrowed the book. I’ll take a pass on the author’s next book."
"I loved this book! Yes, it was long, but it moved along pretty quickly for me. I loved the new characters, especially Simi and Tani. I’d love to see them in another book.

The storyline has two main threads: the murder of a police detective and the topic of female genital mutilation. I felt the author handled the FGM topic very well. She did her research and skillfully created the characters and their story. I learned a lot about this practice of “purifying” girls to make them “suitable for marriage”. I’m a pretty sensitive type, but I didn’t find any of this to be triggering.

The two threads come together as we discover that the victim was investigating a facility which practiced FGM. Lynley, Havers, Nkata, and Deborah St. James are center stage for this one. If you enjoy these characters as much as I do, I think you will find this book to be enjoyable and informative.

P.S. I’m still mad about the death of Helen.

"
