"Not the most riveting of plots, this book starts and ends strong with the middle third being slower. I enjoyed the political intrigue and strategy, but felt that there could be more. The time and location jumps and many characters led to some cloudiness as a reader and I felt a little bogged down by background information at times. I did enjoy the magical components, the rules were easy to understand and it added to the story. I like this book enough to want to read the next book in the series because this book set up #2 very well. 3/5"
