In this mischievous and utterly original debut, Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm-inspired tales. As readers follow the siblings through a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind (and beyond) the bread crumbs, edible houses, and outwitted witches. Fairy tales have never been more irreverent or subversive as Hansel and Gretel learn to take charge of their destinies and become the clever architects of their own happily ever after.

"This is a fun middle grade fairy rewrite, with lots of humor. It's also very bloody. It's literally the bloodiest kids book I've ever read. Heads get cut off, one of the main characters goes to hell, people get murdered left and right, there's a serial killer. Throughout the story, the author will speak directly to the reader. It's usually before the really bloody bits, where he will issue a warning that it's about to get scary. This is also one of the most mature kids books I've ever read. In the first book, the main characters are trying to find someone to love them, but always failing. The central theme overall is that pain brings maturity and growth. The last book in the series has a very awesome emotional climax, connecting the themes of the books directly to events in the author's own life. All in all, this series as a whole is quite dark on the surface, but it manages to maintain a bright spark of optimism throughout. I love these books. Some of the best middle grade fiction I've ever read, and I read a lot of middle grade fiction. 9/10"
