As the Big Island of Hawai'i faces an eruption of unprecedented intensity, the U.S. military contends with the consequences of a long-held doomsday secret. The master of the techno-blockbuster joins forces with the master of the modern thriller. Eruption is the passion project Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had been pursuing for years ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. After discovering his notes and the partial manuscript, his wife, Sherri Crichton, searched for more than a decade until she found the perfect partner: James Patterson, the world's most popular storyteller. "A seismic publishing event...It's a thrill and the pages practically turn themselves." --Associated Press "Red-hot storytelling...The action scenes will make readers' eyes pop as the tension continues to build." --Kirkus (starred review) "Fast-paced and deeply considered...A cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss."--Time

"I was disappointed by this novel. I was an enormous fan of Crichton’s work but since his unfortunate passing, the unfinished transcripts that have been completed by others and then released have been uninteresting. Unfortunately this novel was no exception. It plodded along and never engaged me. Others may feel differently, but I didn’t think this one was worth the read. "

"I am a huge fan of Michael Crichton, and I hoped this book would live up to Crichton’s best sellers (Rising Sun, Jurassic Park, Disclosure). A volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island is about to erupt, and a slew of scientists, engineers, demolition experts and Army personnel try to alter nature and redirect the lava flow. Complicating matters is the army’s secret: many containers of radioactive material are hidden away in the volcano’s mountain and if they break, more than Hawaii will disappear. The pace of the story is fast, but it tends to go on and on with certain characters putting themselves in harm’s way for video and photos. If Michael Crichton were still living, he might have created a stronger balance of compelling characters, intricate plot and dramatic situation. "

"Eruption, started as a manuscript by Michael Crichton before being posthumously completed by James Patterson, is a fantastically thrilling read. As you might guess based on the pedigree, there is a high-stakes sci-fi component to the story. The dialogue is realistic, with each character feeling like they have their own voice and motivation. Honestly, the ending feels more than a little contrived. The surprise resolution comes in the form of something that a team of scientists like the one featured would have considered very early on. The rest of the narrative gradually builds in tension in a very satisfying way, though. I also don't like the way the love triangle subplot (not an important part of the narrative, but part of it) resolved. I read the whole book in eight days as an ebook and I was never bored, but I didn't read for three of those days because I was saving battery charges in the aftermath of a hurricane, so I really read the whole novel in five days. "Kind of a mess. Tons of plot holes, and an ending that is unsatisfying to say the least. Really a shame because usually I like Michael Crichton. Don't know if it's the unfinished manuscript, James Patterson's hand, or both. It's not terrible, but it's not great."

"Not perfect but I loved it beyond all measure as one more adventure with a beloved author. Lots of science handwaving that makes it fun and a ticking timebomb of a volcano that spurs the story forward. "

"Dantes Peak meets Outbreak in a hugely entertaining and action packed ride.

Mauna Loa is set to erupt but that is not the only danger. Toxic waste called Agent Black has been stored on the Big Island of Hawaii since the 1950's. The effects of this waste on the Island would be catastrophic but the the effect on the world could be fatal. The imminent eruption is not only a danger to the islands residents but the whole world. John MacGregor, his team and the United States Forces are in a race against time to prevent annihilation. Do they have the time and resources to divert tragedy or are they all doomed?

Eruption was the perfect mixture of action and suspense. Highly reccommemd to fans of disaster movies such as Dantes Peak, Volcano and Outbreak."
