Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this “deliciously fun” (Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches) epic fantasy appeals to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost. When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice. It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret. But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

"2 star but for a few excellent **** scenes I'll give out an extra one. I had difficulty paying attention to the audiobook. Matthew Spencer was a great narrator it's just that the scene changes were abrupt and the plot so boring it bordered on incoherence at times. Frankly, if I wasn't intrigued by how the thruple thing would work out I would have stopped reading.

Remy, Xiadoan, and Zidan. When Remy met and fought with Zidan immediately the heat and tension had me hooked. I could feel the lust for one another. Then Remy met Xiadoan and it was like a wet blanket had been thrown over the whole situation. Xiadoan was more a little sister or a third wheel. Also, there was little romantic tension but still banter which was all I could hold on to.

The character depth was lacking and I might could have forgiven all that I am complaining about if it wasn't for the plot. I mean there was a plot but I couldn't tell you much about it because I didn't care. Even the battle scenes were difficult to picture in my head. Not much made sense. One minute everything would be fine then the next there is an army outside like no one is patrolling the grounds.

Zidane and Remy was the only puzzle piece that fit together. It began with hatred and lust then turned into more. But that was unfulfilling. The whole book felt flat. That's the best way to describe it."
"Not the type of book i like. I didnt even finish it cause its just meh to me. I also tried reading it while i was tired but couldnt sleep so dont use my review as a final decision on if u wanna read it.
Theres so much detail i kept skipping till smth grabbed my attention or there was diolog. Not super detailed enough for the spice (1/5) which i prefer. Only spice is that there is biting (very little) and that its a poly relationship. Pretty vanilla."
"The story it's self seemed interesting enough with the vampire monsters sounding disgusting. /pos
But it romance didn't feel like anything and went quickly in to "spicy" territory with them having seemingly no shown chemistry.
It ended up putting me off so much I couldn't get through the last fifth of the book."
"I really liked a lot of this. Poly romance, political intrigue, and ***** vampires are some of my favorite things and this really went full steam with it. Some of the scene felt a little all over the place and I don’t really like a lot of drawn-out action sequences but the pacing of the story overall was fantastic."
"This book was all kinds of fun. The reader is taken on a fast paced, steamy adventure into a fantasy realm filled with vampires and court intrigue. Remy is a reaper and the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne. He works for the king and queen as a bounty hunter to keep the realm clear of vampire threats, but a new type of monster starts terrorizing the kingdom and Remy is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of who’s behind the attacks. This is his professional life; behind the scenes he is using his body to gather secrets and information about the first court vampires so that he can have his revenge for the killing of his mother. When tragedy forces Remy to work closely with a vampire he hates and his wife, a vampire he finds attractive, things begin to get strange. This book reads like Witcher. It has spice, it has monsters, it has humor (big yes to the witty banter), it has blood and action, and it has layers that can keep the story going past one book. The world building lends this world a dark vibe that you would expect from a book with vampires, but it still has a historical feudal society kind of feel. I can’t wait to jump into the second book.

Thank you to Saga Press and NetGalley for giving me a chance to read this book. I ended up purchasing the Audio as well and thought Matthew Spencer did an amazing job with the story. If your looking for something a little bit dark and a little bit naughty then head to your local independent bookstore or library today to request a copy today."
"This had a really strong start. In the beginning, I really felt for the main character and was rooting for him, and the tension between him and the vampire couple was really strong. I lost interest around the halfway point because the romance was developing too quickly/unconvincingly for my taste, and I didn’t really care about the plot/mystery and it end up being too predictable in my opinion."
