From the bestselling author of STILL ALICE comes a powerful and heartbreakingly moving exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom – and what it means to be alive. An accomplished concert pianist, Richard’s inspired performances received standing ovations from audiences all over the world. Every one of his fingers was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago. Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralysed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce – his divorce. He knows his left arm will go next. Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralysed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it. When Richard is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late. As poignant and powerful as Jojo Moyes's Me Before You, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.Praise for Every Note Played ‘Only Lisa Genova could bring such honesty and grace to the war against ALS. Searing writing and a must-read.’ Helen Simonson, New York Times bestselling author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand ‘Lisa Genova writes with humor and humanity, but also with a scientist’s eye about the daily depredations of disease, the incremental losses, the slower acceptances, the rage, the love, the courage, and, strangely enough, the joy. A nocturne of the soul. Read this book, read it all night, and wake up glad to be alive.' Bill Roorbach, author of Life Among Giants, The Remedy for Love and The Girl of the Lake ‘Genova expertly details the devastation ALS wreaks on Richard, and though her latest is a sometimes difficult read, she finds hope in the opportunities Richard has to repair his relationships with his daughter and brothers before it’s too late.’? "I would have given this book two stars but a moving and redemptive ending provided some relief from the otherwise depressing and graphic slog of the first 75%. Genova describes in great detail what happens when a lonely arrogant selfish pianist gets ALS, and details every gory thing about how he copes. Neither he nor his ex-wife - the main characters - are particularly sympathetic characters most of the book. The author seems to like writing about what has to happen with the ***** of a man who cannot move his arms, which does serve to emphasize the embarrassing elements of the physical care required but feels a bit excessive at times (how many times do we need to discuss his bathroom habits?). But ultimately this book ended with being about what it means to face death. And that is worthwhile to think about, especially when handled with the realism and sensitivity Genova brought to it. Not a FUN book and don’t read if you can’t handle descriptions of bodily functions."

"My mother had a disease very similar to a slow-moving ALS. We lost her in 2018. I loved this book because it reminded me of my mom"

"First, thank you to NetGalley, Threshold/Gallery, and Lisa Genova for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All I can say is - Wow!! This book gripped me from the moment I started and kept me engrossed (and up late) throughout. I have read most of Lisa Genova's books and have enjoyed them all, this one included. Last Note Played is about Richard, a celebrated classical pianist and what happens to him, his career, and his estranged family when he is diagnosed with ALS. It gives you an inside, heart-wrenching look at the disease and its effects on the one suffering from it and those around him. I was moved to tears by the end of the book. However, the story is also uplifting as it deals with issues of family, forgiveness, and realizing what is truly important in life. The characters were portrayed realistically - all with strengths, but also weaknesses. This book provides insight into this debilitating and horrible disease and I hope it acts to spur on more research towards a cure."

"Oh my gosh what a good story I loved this book.. prepare yourself for a bit of a slow read but it's so worth it. This book made me cry and appreciate life without a terminal illness so much more. Good book for empaths and those concerned with exploring the psychological state of people who are diagnosed a life-altering illness, as well as broadening your knowledge about certain diseases. Made me cry, get your tissues ready guys."
