A chilling ghost story with a twist: the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter People returns to the woods of Vermont to tell the story of a husband and wife who don't simply move into a haunted house--they build one....In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on forty-four acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago. With her passion for artifacts, Helen finds special materials to incorporate into the house--a beam from an old schoolroom, bricks from a mill, a mantel from a farmhouse--objects that draw her deeper into the story of Hattie and her descendants, three generations of Breckenridge women, each of whom died suspiciously. As the building project progresses, the house will become a place of menace and unfinished business: a new home, now haunted, that beckons its owners and their neighbors toward unimaginable danger.

"I read about 70 pages of The Invited, and this is not working for me. Nothing has happened, and the characters are insufferable to me. YOU CAN'T READ BOOKS AND JUST KNOW HOW TO BUILD A HOUSE. NO. Anyway, I guess I was expecting something closer to The Winter People, and this was not it. There's no spook factor in this one. I'm out."
"Really enjoyed this book!"

"I really liked this book!! An easy read while also very enjoyable and just the right amount of spooky. I finished it a few days ago and I’m still thinking about it! "

"This is the perfect book for this time of year. I love a good haunted house story (The Good House by Tananarive Due was one of my favs from last year) but so much of the genre is physiological. Like, is the house really haunted or is the character just crazy? There were definitely elements of that in this novel, but I never doubted for a second that the supernatural played a role. And the concept of building a house that was haunted due to the elements they were adding? Genius. This was perfectly paced, and I honestly did not see the ending coming at all. There are enough clues to guess what was going on, but it was twisty and spooky, with a little bit of history thrown in for good measure. This was a great story and a great “horror lite” option for those who don’t love all the gore and viciousness that comes around Halloween!"
