Another Brooklyn

"Though very short, I can see why this novel was shortlisted for the National Book Award last year. It’s beautifully written and extremely evocative. I just didn’t emotional connect with the book, though that shouldn’t deter others from reading it! I would definitely recommend this, especially if you have not read the author before, as she writes both YA and adult books!"

"Another Brooklyn is a short novel that tells the story of black girlhood in the city of Brooklyn. If you are not a fan of poetry , I probably wouldn’t recommend this novel because Jacqueline Woodson’s writing style in this novel is lyrical, which I absolutely adored!. <br/><br/>This story follows August, who goes back to Brooklyn to bury her father. Being back in Brooklyn brings back a flood of memories. Making the big move from Tennessee to Brooklyn with her baby brother and father, but no mother. August tells herself that her mother will find her way back to them. She especially remembers her 3 best friends: Sylvia, Angela, and Gigi. August and her friends were attached at the hip and I enjoyed reading about their friendship. <br/><br/>Another Brooklyn reminded me of summertime. Woodson has a way of making you feel the atmosphere in her writing. Usually I don’t care for books that move back and forth through time but this time I didn’t mind it. My only gripe with this book is that it was too short. I would’ve loved more from Woodson. It felt like just as I got invested in the different characters and their development, it was over. Although short, Woodson crafted a beautiful and heart-wrenching story of girlhood, discovery, and grief. I would read more from this author!<br/>"
