How far would you go to escape fate?In this prequel to the international bestselling WICKED LOVELY series (over a million copies sold), the Faery Courts collide a century before the mortals in Wicked Lovely are born. Thelma Foy, a jeweler with the Second Sight in iron-bedecked 1890s New Orleans, can see through the glamours faeries wear to hide themselves from mortals, but if her secret were revealed, the fey would steal her eyes, her life, or her freedom. But when the Dark King, Irial, rescues her, Tam must confront everything she thought she knew about faeries, men, and love. Unbeknownst to Tam, she is the prize in a centuries-old fight between Summer Court and Winter Court. To protect her, Irial must risk a war he can’t win--or surrender the first mortal woman he's loved. "What a delight to discover how much I loved being back in the Wicked Lovely world, discovering details about beloved characters that made me want to race back for a series reread. This is Irial's story set in 1890s New Orleans, brimming with faerie court drama and steamy romance. Can we. and should we, outrun fate? And if so, are we prepared for the consequences? I could not put it down." --Angela Mann, Kepler's Books, Menlo Park CA"Set 100 years before the events in Wicked Lovely, Cold Iron Heart finds Irial, the king of the Dark Court, in New Orleans and entranced by a mortal. Is his interest in Thelma Foy just a passing fascination, or could it change the course of her life and the world forever? Melissa Marr masterfully rises to challenge of writing a prequel by both expanding on the mythology of the original series while telling a story that exists wholly on its own. Fans of the series will inhale this delicious glimpse into Irial’s past.”--John McDougall of Murder by the Book, Houston TX

"If I was rating this purely on nostalgia it would be a 4 star book... But I use Cawpile and it got a 3... Here's why:

I loved the Wicked Lovely series and was thrilled about a prequel and one about Irial? Heck yes sign me up. I got it kind of expecting so much from it, but overall I felt that Tam's character felt forced in a way. There wasn't enough development to show why she makes certain decisions and its more like the sole reason she behaves or makes certain decisions is to move the plot along.

Irial is... Very different to say the least. I was looking for the darkness and the revelry from the court in it and that just really wasn't in the book at all. You see very little of Irial's court in general and the bit you do it's very watered down.

The time period was ALL over the place. For most of the book I kept trying to figure out what time period we were even in. I mean it says we are in the 1800s but nothing in the scenery, clothing, demeanors, or speech alluded to any period let alone the 1800s.

There is so much else that frustrated me but here is one very important detail I want to make clear. The dedication of this book very clearly states this was never supposed to be a published book. It was something Melissa Marr wrote for her self, and very clearly she self published to share with her fans that have continued to ask for more Irial. This book was that.

I loved being brought back to the world and seeing characters from a new stand point that I didn't see in the whole of The Wicked Lovely Series. I enjoyed speculating what changes Irial's character farther on in time. I enjoyed the novella at the end of the book too PS.

I loved the nostalgia of it all and it certainly reaffirmed my love for Melissa Marr's work even if this was not my favorite piece she wrote. I cherish this book with all it's flaws because of the series it's part of."
