"One of my favorite stories of all time. While the split personality aspect draws the most attention from critics (the fight between good and evil and how man has two sides and all that), to me, that’s more how the story is told rather than what it’s about. The theme of the book can be interpreted many different ways: a metaphor for drug addiction, an allegory for man’s inherent corruptibility, etc. And that’s what I think gets lost behind the analysis of the narrative gimmick: deeper meaning beyond good vs evil.

Personally, I see Jekyll and Hyde as the allegory on corruptibility. We all have a part of ourselves that we wish we could indulge in but know we can’t. We wish we could just have it and live our lives untouched by the consequences to either our bodies or our souls. This is what Jekyll tries to do with his persona of Hyde; give himself free reign to be as vile as he wants without touching his own soul. However, as Hyde begins to take more control, Jekyll discovers what most of us have to: we can’t indulge one side of ourselves without it affecting our whole person. You can’t be one person on Saturday night without it affecting who you are on Sunday morning.

We can’t dip our toes into the quicksand of evil without the rest of us being sucked in."

"It's so fascinating to read the original source material of such a famous and enduring story. The characters of Jekyll and Hyde have quite fittingly taken on lives of their own, and after reading this I am struck by two thoughts, the first being that this story is really all about morality. That's interesting enough in its own right, but the exploration of duality in a single being is so forward, especially for the time that this was written. My second thought pertains to that, since I wonder what the average person thought of this story when it was written. I can't imagine what it would be like to read the story without knowing the ending, and I can only imagine it must have been quite shocking. Totally recommend, it's a quick read and well worth it"
