Anaïs Nin
The inspiration for the six-part series "Little Birds" from Sophia Al-Maria. These thirteen erotic short stories by the acclaimed author of Henry and June explore the nature of desire, taboo, and female sensuality. From the beach towns of Normandy to the streets of New Orleans, these thirteen vignettes introduce us to a covetous French painter, a sleepless wanderer of the night, a guitar-playing gypsy, and a host of others who yearn for and dive into the turbulent depths of romantic experience. "[It is] so distinct an advance in the depiction of female sensuality that I felt, on reading it, enormous gratitude."--Alice Walker "One of contemporary literature's most important writers.--Newsweek

"Was really interesting, some of it was uncomfortable, but overall interesting and worth it to read. Plus it’s super short, so it just took me two days, and I didn’t have to read a ton either day."

"This was the first book I ever read of Anaïs Nin after years of growing interest through quotes read and praise from friends. Turned out to be not what I expected of her and I'm unsure how I feel about it. Some of these stories were clever and a breeze to read through, but I was never really stunned or aroused by this "erotica" - and some stories concluded a bit too abruptly before anything substantial had developed. Maybe I couldn't get past her candidly admitting in the intro pages that she had written them at a time she was desperate for money, so I must have immediately assumed they'd turn out quite unimaginative. But I'm not dismissing Anaïs Nin at all. In fact I already have a copy of "Delta of Venus" that I plan to read (...eventually) and I'm interested in picking up some of her other works as well: particularly her diaries."
